The Story of Softspikes
In the early 1990s, metal golf spikes dominated the market and were considered the standard in the golf industry. A small Maryland-based company, Softspikes, Inc., developed an alternative plastic cleat, but it was challenged with convincing golf shops to change a long-established pattern.
Tony Duran’s proactive grassroots strategies and inside sales execution to key influencers (golf professionals, golf directors, club managers and golf course superintendents) created a steady wave of golf courses banning metal spikes from their facilities, for the benefit of golfers and golf courses alike. Plastic cleats now make up over 99% of the spike replacement market today.
